July 9, 2024 - My Favorite Comic!

Because it is very hot, I will allow you to stay home and do the assignment for the rest of July. The post will appear online, on Monday (our class is Tuesday) please have it finished by 18:15 on Tuesday morning of each week.   

You must return to class in person in September. New people might join the class too. If you want to invite a friend, that would be nice!

  Today let's talk about comics that we like. it could be from an individual book, the newspaper or from online. Explain what the comic is, what it is about and why you like it. Include a sample of at least 1 work from the comic and explain.   The comic MUST be in English, but if it is a translated Japanese work, that is ok! 

My example:

My favorite comic of all time is called "Calvin and Hobbes." It was printed from 1985-1995. It is no long being made because the artist did not want the stories to become boring or unoriginal. The comic is still very good even though it is old. The story is about a boy named Calvin who has a toy tiger called Hobbes. When Calvin is alone, the tiger becomes real and he uses his imagination to do many exciting things. It reminds me of when I was a kid and imaginary things could feel real. 

It looks like a kid's comic but the dialogue is often abstract and aimed at adults. Kids can still understand it, but there is a higher level of humor that only adults could understand because they have already grown up.

The other thing I like is that the artist, Bill Watterson, refuses to put Calvin and Hobbes on T-shirts and make toys out of them. He rejected a lot of money just so he could control things his own way. It makes being a fan more special, I think because the only way to see them is to read them.

This comic is funny because Calvin thinks if he hides, his father will be sad he ran away. His father knows  it's just a game, but he then pretends that it's good Calvin is gone which makes him reappear. It's funny because that is exactly what kids do for attention, and his dad called him out on it.

I like this one because Calvin thinks an umbrella can make him fly. After almost dying, he lifts up in the air for 1 second and is so happy about it. It reminds me of myself. I used to do this all the time as a kid. It also never worked, but I always thought if I tried one more time, then it would.
